Garmin Varia Vision (HUD) Review
Garmin have moved into the Heaps Up / Insight Display market with news of the soon to be released Varia Vision device. The Varia Vision which weighs in at just 28g is basically a monitor device, which attaches to your existing glasses, which then can display data from compatible Garmin Edge computers in your line of sight. Unlike similar and indeed more expensive devices such as the Recon Jet, the Varia Vision is in effect just a monitor thus does not contain its own computer nor GPS. The device is attached to standard cycling glasses by means of a quick release type rubber mount.

Garmin Varia Vision Overview
The Varia Vision is equipped to display up to 4 data fields plus colour graphic displays direct to your line of sight. You can define exactly which data is visible such as Heart rate, speed or power without the need to glance down at your Garmin Edge. The Varia Vision also can aid the rider with navigation as it can be configured to display navigation prompts, broadcast from your Edge computer, including street names and turn by turn navigational arrows.
The device is also equipped with vibration alerts which notify you of predefined activities such as approaching segments, heart rate zones and incoming calls and texts. Another great feature of the Varia Vision is that it is fully compatible with Garmin’s Varia Rearview Rader so you will in real terms have virtual eyes in the back of your head so to speak.
With the device’s ultra-light weight of just 28 grams plus the ease in which it can be attached to any cycling glasses plus it’s built in ambient light sensor which gives clear display even in bright direct sunlight, not to mention the ease of switching data screens by the touch panel which we found work extremely well even with “heavy” gloves, the device seems to have a very bright future.
Garmin Varia Vision Compatible Devices
Please note the Varia Vision IS NOT compatible with all Garmin Edge computers. Garmin state that at this current time the device requires either an Edge 1000 or Edge 520 plus is also compatible with the Varia Rearview Radar.
